3 steps to shooting more professional videos with your phone.

Not a week goes past that we don’t receive an email or Facebook message asking what sort of camera should I be using to make my videos.

It’s been said that best video camera to use is the one that you have with you.

Given that just about all of us have a phone that shoots video, in todays training I’m going to share 3 tips to help you shoot more professional looking videos using only your phone.

The video quality on our phones has come a long way in the past 5 years with most mobile devices able to produce video quality that was only available in high end video cameras just a few short years ago.

With that being said theres still a few things that we need to take into account if we want to produce professional quality videos using just our mobile devices.

1. Use a Tripod.

Video stabilisation continues to improve, but  if you want to up the professional feel of your video then Use a tripod!  Shakey videos are amateurish and best and can literally be nauseating to your viewers.

So…do yourself a favour and buy a tripod.

My favourite iPhone tripod only costs a few bucks on eBay and Ive bought multiple and have them lying around the office and at home. (Here’s an Ebay link)

If you don’t have a tripod handy then think about propping your mobile device up on a book or something similar to keep it still.

2. Don’t ignore the audio.

Research has continued to show that your viewers will watch poor quality video with good audio but they won’t continue to watch if the audio is poor.

Whilst the video on our mobile devices has come a long way the audio on most mobile devices still remains poor.

When shooting with your mobile device follow these 3 steps to improve audio quality.

  1. Be sure to have the subject as close as possible to you camera.  The further the camera is from the subject the more background sound you are going to pick up and the worse your audio will be.
  2. Be aware of your environment and take every step you can to decrease background sounds like wind, fans, heaters and a noisy work environment.
  3. Use an external microphone…. at it’s simplest this might look like you using your headphones.  The audio signal from the headphones will give a richer and higher quality feel to your videos than simple using the built in microphone alone.

Alternatively, consider investing in an exertatnal microphone.  . Good quality external microphones are available for well under $100 and will have a drastic impact on the overall quality of your video.

3. Shoot in landscape

Turning your phone horizontally (to landscape mode) is the best way to record all your videos. Period!

Not only is it much easier to handle the phone this way but most importantly you won’t see those annoying black side bars when watching back your video.

Plus everything looks much more professional recorded in horizontal.

So there it is…if you want to up the quality of the videos created on your mobile device remember to …..

  • Use a tripod,
  • Don’t ignore the audio
  • and always shoot in landscape.

If you’ve got any questions about how to make magnetic videos that attract new patients, boost referrals and sky rocket your retention then be sure to ask them down below.

If you not already sending your patients to your helpful videos, if you’re not regularly posting videos to your website and social media then you’re missing out!

Using video is the most powerful tool I know of to position you as an authority, expert and celebrity in your community.

Remember the good video that you make will always out perform the perfect one you don’t.

Until next time, thanks for all that you do

and keep saving lives

See you soon,

Angus and Tony
